There are not many twenty four hour places with free WI-FI that people could just plop down in the middle of the night in Chicago. other major cities have many places for night owls to loiter and go on the computer for hours. Old Town in Chicago had one of these rare spots in Chicago and now they are not open twenty four hours and this bothers many people. The Piper Alley's Starbucks on North Avenue and Wells use to have all sorts of strange wacky fucks in the middle of the night and I would often make the drive from the burbs for this unique urban experience. You find nothing like this in the burbs and it really is upsetting that this Starbucks and the one in Lakeview no longer is open all of the time. There were so many artists, writers, students, homeless, hipsters, jerks, tourists,b usiness fucks and others would be at this generic ubiquitous boring coffee house and transform t into something special that you would find in Portland and Seattle. Young people especially in the city need a place to go to late at night that is a third place and not a dam bar. One person was quoted though in the Tribune piece about this change as saying they wanted to get away inn the middle of the night and not be there when if the kids woke up. Who exactly would be home then for the kid. Luckily for the kids of this person Starbucks will not be open all the time. Now Piper's alley will only stay open until 2 am and people will have to find a lame 24 hour taqueria or Greek family restaurant to hang around.
