The author Mike Lofgren spent three decades in congress and pretty much knows how this inept institution runs. In his book "the Party IsOver" he really goes on the attack on mostly Republicans and how they exasperated him with their evolution over the years into a party of political extremes and lunatics. The Maine Republican tactic in recent years is too get as much of the public distrusting the government so they can limit the size and importance. This should come as no surprise from a political party that is ruined by Relgious extremists who want no rival to who shall help the less fortunate in society. Mike spends a chapter talking about how libertarians and social conservatis spin e constitution around and use this written pamphlet hundreds of years ago to run agendas today. The whole money is speech debate points this out and one should remind these idiots that taxation without representation is the thing that started the revolution. In their worldview only those with massive money are deserving of representation and they are the new tyrant class guilty of worse abuses to freedom than the British ever could.
Lofgrens transition to a progressive makes him examine the tax structure that is heavily weighed in on the Middle Class and the poor as the rich use their political clout to pressure politicians to give them massive breaks. He also writes on the insane spending on jet fighters and the military. This has so bloated the military and taken stuff away from real infrastructure improvements one has to wonder who exactly is the American military especially for and reaps the benefits of this spending. The media complicity to the Republican strategies and abuses is explored as the author dispels the idea of a liberal media. Mike foes through several problems with our system and even attacks the tax-exempt foundations which is method tycoons use to tax dodge their money and move them around keeping their inextinguishable inheritances under their own name and heirs. The lie that their money goes to charities and educational causes are in actuality expressions of political advocacy that gives them a tax exemption the average person can never dream. All the chapters in this book are interesting and highlight key elements of why America is dysfunctional and in a child like condition. He confronts the rise of Christian radicals and their influence in changing the GOP and making them a party unwilling to negotiate. How the part moved to the right and became the anti- intellectual and shameful anti-science. Lofgren shows some history how often evangelical revivals take over political debates and divide folks. Te author has some hope though that once these old fraying baby boomers start drying off that the memory of the culture wars of the sixties will loosen and the causes of the political divide that is destroying America will start to disappear as relevant issues making way for more important issues to be addressed for this nation. An amazing book.
