There was a gold episode in Barney Miller. It seems in season four episode eighteen that some Jewish women's husband was selling all of their assets and household items in order to purchase gold. She went to the percent to press charges and in this episode we get this classic exchange between Harris and Deitrich. Dietrich goes on to tell Harris that the wealth he has in stocks and bonds is basically funny money monopoly stuff and only gold brings real wealth against financial collapse that was apparently the subject even back in 1975. Deitrich talked about currency manipulation and hyperinflation and pretty much explained the gold hoarding paranoia that consists of the gold selling market in America and around the world. Harris and Art took one look at some of these pieces of gold and marveled at the evils and craziness that people would go for in acquiring building wealth through these rocks.
Gold is a precious resource that should not be handled lightly and it does make man do many crazy things throughout history. This has continued to this day with all these crazy youtube sites trying to push everyone on the gold exchange to curb debt and pretty much curb society s we know it. I wonder if Barney Miller did a oil episode in season six
