It was a shock to the young professional crowd made up moistly of Iowa educated kids who refused to move back to their hometowns following graduation and came to Chicago. They would soon gravitate to neighborhoods filled with people who looked and acted like them and had lots of bars for them to continue their binge drinking careers along with their highly overpaid professional careers. ,any yuppies would settle in Wicker Park along Damen Avenue. There were no families, grandparents, teenagers, Mexicans, etc etc and the area offered many bars and summer street festivals which these Iowa grads looked forward. Silver Cloud was one of their hangouts and the day that this bar closed down dejected many a former frat boys who enjoyed going to this bar getting drunk and into fights outside the bar. These were some nasty young bucks that got jeer occupy protestors during the NATO protests and punks who would urinate all over peoples yawns once the city forced the bar to close down.
So I was driving past Damen this past weekend and seen this bar closed and wonder how many drunk yuppies now had to find a new hang out to spill their beer and obnoxiousness. They will miss the juke box here and the pool tables that offered regulars free pool while those unknown to management and bartenders had to pay full price. The waitresses here also have to get new jobs attending to regulars at other bars and they may have new owners who insist they give good service to all people who enter the bar and not just regulars are those they have a crush. Life will not be easy for the young folks who live in Wicker park as they may see more of their neighborhood favorites replaced someday with either empty stores or corporate donut places that offer little urban attraction and drew them away from their native Iowa.
