Every native knows the man who ripped off the Indian the most was Andrew Jackson and to this day many natives on reservations refuse a twenty dollar bill. Author Steve Inskeep looks at these events leading up to the removal of Native Americans in his book called "Jacksonland" and how despite best efforts to assimilate and become like Americans Andrew Jackson sent an ally out of the Native lands of Tennessee and North Carolina into a disgraceful act called "The Trail Of Tears". This thrilling narrative concerns the two principle leaders of this time period that had to deal with this tragic event in Andrew Jackson and Cherokee chief John Ross. This book does a great job covering the difficult work of john Ross in using the legal system and democratic principles of the enlightment to battle Andrew Jackson's wicked plans of moving all people of Native American heritage West of the Mississippi river. People often say the US expanded tremendously with the Louisiana purchase but the largest land grab in this nations history was when they took land from what had been independent Choctaw,Creek, Chickasaw, and Cherokee territory and eventually this wasn't enough and Andrew Jackson started a war of conquest in Florida to root out the Seminole in the swamps. Ross championed the Cherokee cause all the way to the Supreme Court and for the first time made many Americans question the long Indian policy of forced removal and how broken the treaty system was towards the original Americans. Andrew Jackson and those agents pushing for the removal of natives in the Southeast it would be concluded soon bought up much of this valuable fertile property making a fortune for themselves and their descendants with these illegal seizures of millions of acres in the deep South whose wealth would be created mostly out of cheap labor known then as legalized slavery. This book covers key presidential elections leading up to the disastrous 1830's and where all the Indians were forced marched towards the dust bowls of Oklahoma. This is a great read for learning more of the major events and actions leading up to the most dark decision domestically in this nations history.
