Otto Jansen and Lee Park Kong praise the champions of Starcraft
Otto Jansen
South Koreans dominated showing their athletic prowess in the WCS Global Finals of StarCraft II in an amazing final. Korean Lee-Sak parting G won the final and the right to call himself the best StarCraft player of all fucking time. The quarterfinals of this amazing video game tournament saw only one non-Korean player and the domination of the sport of video games by South Koreans is a phenomenon that is pretty well ignored by the mainstream media. This is not surprising to StarCraft II players from around the word who often complained about their asses getting kicked by players on-lie from the South Korea as they evidently have time to play and practice some twenty hours a day on these video games. The final four of StarCraft II tournament in Shanghai saw massive crowds turn out to see which young man would be crowned the new king of StarCraft. I decided to talk to our own Lee Park Kong to get an insight why all the best video game players are coming from Korea.
OJ: I am sure you watched the video game WCS final of StarCraft II live. What gives. Why are Koreans so obsessed with this game?
LPK : Koreans love cyber cafes and many young men without girlfriends..without the remote possibility of gaining girlfriends practice and they play ..these video games all day long. Fir many Asian male teens StarCraft II is reality.
OJ : Yes I hears the hypothesis that many of these teens actually live in these video games per say. Life has become the screen and they are totally oblivious to their real earthly surroundings. these tournaments are becoming big in Asia. Much like the SuperBowl
LPK I am amazed how this sort and the WCS has given these geeks a special pace in society. Many of thee men are athletic in the unconventional and traditional way and get them behind a remote controller they can do wonders without that fucking pixel on the screen. I have never seen such ability to manipulate and maneuver a character ona screen like I have seen in south Korea. It is kinda scary in a way and has technology and warfare evolves you can kind of see the South Koreans becoming modern day Mongols.
OJ The sport of video game has grown around the world but it is in Asia where it is most beloved. Is it just a large population of young males who cause this popularity of video gaming to prevail in the culture.
LPK There are many males who stay at home with their parents and have lots of idle time and enjoying the excellent graphics and gaming from developers is part of the benefit of being in Asia. this thing can only get bigger and someday video gaming attendance will rival baseball in Japan. video gaming will rival ping pong in China. Video gaming will rival fishing in Vietnam.
OJ Many Americans cannot comprehend that adults would spend thousands into obtaining a seat to watch these video game battles and competitions. What can you say to the average beer belly sports addict who refuses to recognize video games as athletic competition and sport.
LPK If you seen how these boys practice and prepare for StarCraft games you would think otherwise. the concentration of the game to remember and pick up objects right at the key moments is incredible and takes a lot of time and patience to accomplish and master. These south Korean kids are more athletic than any soccer player or footballer. Who is to decide what is competition and talent in a world of mind craft. Sports is all about mentality.
OJ I was really impressed with how the media in China promoted and pushed this competition. everyone seemed to know about these finals and I saw many Lee Sak party t shirts. the geek image has gone mainstream in Korea.
LPK Its all about technology and the screen. People are more observant that a participator in Asia sports and video games fits a nice niche in this. it takes immense muscle thumb power to make it to the top of the gaing world and these young Koreans have some of the strongest baddest fingers ever and the amount of power that comes from these joints is amazing these kids are amazing athletes of the 21st century.
