Music and live concerts have long past its hey day yet the city of Chicago is giving some crony developers an opportunity to make 75 million dollars and for a few to redistribute in fixing up some old theater in a bad part of Chicago. Rahm Emanuel is leaving office but seeking new ways to give connection firms some major work and financing projects and the restoration of the Uptown Theatre makes no sense in this age of few music acts of any interest outside of the large summer festivals. There was a reason the original Uptown theater and this area far form downtown declined rapidly and until these issues are addressed and changes in musical tastes and culture then this deal makes no sense . Most acts that would headline a restored Uptown theater wold bring in more trouble and police on nightly calls
There is no real need for another music entertainment and not enough money printing to persuade mot people that there was ever a need for the Uptown. What this community needs is green and fresh grocery stores and jobs and not to once again be hijacked by the equity financiers to preserve a building and make it a money generating palace for the music and restaurant elites and industry as if there were not already enough outlets for their fake numbers events. Once again rich people are using tax-increment financing so more hip hop and rap acts can be purchased and displayed on stage but this time an egregious for of tax payer money is being used for restore this theater for today's really bad music. Recent writings describe of the past performers who once highlighted shows at the Uptown before it closed in 1981, again because it was no longer economically feasible to have this theater at this location. Another major problem is that many of the performers and their fans are dead and the recognizable names mentioned and are still performing are entering the geriatric age. Todays young music acts and their fans will destroy the restored theatre inside and outside as one can only picture tomorrows headlines and shootings at hip hop acts in the New Uptown. The developers s also gained a huge parking lot for the price of one dollar which they unquestionably seek to be rentiers of it some day bringing a Subway sandwich shop and so forth for hungry diners to these half filed musical concerts that will result form a new and restored UpTown Theater.
