DeKalb is a shit town experiencing a scary increase in diversity for a rural Illinois area and has few decent college bars you would expect for a "college" town this size. The town is so boring for students it is increasingly becoming like a commuter community college than a four year school with a football program climbing in the ranks as a regional power. I was saddened to learn that Otto's bar has been closed for a while and for a long time this has been a great resource for local band acts in this town. This bar was one of the better ones in the area and likely the best the city of DeKalb will see and I wonder how much longer this place reopens as a taqueria or another God Dam Chinese take out. A frozen water pipe burst in January ended this collegiate institution and resulted in a loss of a liquor license for the owner of Otto's and for the students of Dekalb it will mean one less place to hang out on the weekends in shitsville. Winters can be harsh for old structures such as the building that houses Otto's but in reality the village wants to see one less wild bar with loud rock music in their downtown and students to be neglected to dormitories and so forth. This is a dam shame as I mentioned the city is becoming more and more worse as another outlet to dump the poor in Chicago who are being displaced by gentrification as city investors pockets fill with rising property values with displacement of these undesirable elements to exurbs, suburbs, and border rural areas of world class cities. World class cities evidently means being free of minorities with empty pockets and importing others with pockets full of printed dollars. As far Otto's it will remain closed and the likely replacement most likely will be a dumpy taqueria or a upscale sushi place to serve the increasing foreign Asian population
