Alex Owumi's daring escape from war torn Libya

Ali Muhammed

Qaddafi's point guard is a book about Nigerian born player Alex Owumi and how he escaped and was holed up in Libya for a week eating roaches and drinking plant water. The book looks at how Alex got in the position to play pro ball in Libya from his other international journeys and how Qaddafi's Point Guard: The Incredible Story of a Professional Basketball Player Trapped in Libya's Civil Warquickly the situation collapsed in Libya. Alex Owumi was once a top prospect in the college game but it quickly went South for him to various community colleges and the bad Alcorn State college. His level was stil good and was able to play the game for three grand a month in various foreign countries and he wound up on Colonel Qaddafi's personal basketball team before the Libyan people threw his fucking ass out and executed him. People with no ties to e country like Alex benefited from Qaddafi's corrupt law and no where once did Alex look at the situation and inequality in this book that his was living on three thousand a month in Libya for playing a game while average person in Libya was living on less than a dollar a month. Alex ate some food from a street vendor and petted a cat allowing him to get real sick with parasites all over in his stomach.  Life is not easy for the average citizen in Libya and some of these other countries America's b players go to play ball. This is something these jet setting jocks don't care nor realize when they play overseas and even when confronted by the ugly prospect of civil war. This elitist son of a Nigerian elite didn't confront this basic human problem in this bookwhat can you expect he is a basketball player after all.
