Why liberals and atheists should shun St Patrick's day

Jordon Morgan

Bi De Blasio decided not to partake in the anti-gay and discriminatory St Patrick's Day events in New York and one has to wonder if not more people should shun this overtly religious holiday. Clearly there should be an Irish celebration alternative to celebrating this day without having anything to do with the bigotry the Catholic church still holds to this day. The brave mayor of New York's decision to skip this is a step in the right direction and most secularists do not realize that this day holds religious connotations and why any liberal would partake in a parade that doesn't allow the LGBT community to express themselves and their Irish ancestry they share with these folks is utterly ridiculous.
More and more though many are waking up to what the St Pat ricks day parade means aside from wearing green and celebrating Irish heritage. The numerous floats from religious institutions have made this long a parade with more of an agenda for those who wear the cross than those who want to simply celebrate their Irishness. Exclusion has long been a fact of Irish culture and the Catholic Church and some are wondering why this exclusion is often ignored and not criticized more. The decisions on who gets to march or not march on basis of sexuality is a black mark on this parade and these old religious organizers will never realize this until more politicians and protests shape the fundamental changes needed in future St Patrick's day parades around the country. Eventually more and more people will ignore these parades if the bigoted organizers fail to realize what century they are and how their actions slight a progressive population where many of these urban parades occur in North America.
