Guy Baldwin
I have the sad news to report that former Chicago bear and radio sports host Doug Buffone died the other day in his pajamas and in his house. he was seventy one years of age and lived a full battle weary life of gridiron warfare and later almost died many times on the airwaves of WSCR recapping many Chicago Bear losses to the Packers.
Buffone was one of them older players that got paid little and was some how lucky enough to make friends with people in broadcasting that gave this former well-known Chicago bear media outlet shows during the NFL season. he did a show with another former Chicago Bear named Ed O'Bradovich on WSCR radio in Chicago immediately following Bear games and they would go on for four hours dissecting every aspect of this silly sport from all angles and sets. Overanalyzing the game into putting more on peoples minds after the event is something that these corporate radio stations do an extraordinary job at getting people not to pay any attention to the ordinary problems their fellow citizen faces in a society whose system is based on inequality and diversion of the public. This guy was bitter without a doubt that all his years of football play didn't amount to anything financially despite what his colleagues on air would say on this sad day upon hearing news of his death. Doug Buffone was a athlete who had a competitive streak and surely his attitude would be great to his co-workers at his cushy weekly radio show that he was desirously happy to have a outlet and voice at his old age. Whether Doug Buffone was has happy and super friendly to his local garbage man is unknown and doubtful. his show showed the simple anger he could get as these two old men thought that a player was not living up to the quality of play and expectations they met and lucky for them there was not an outlet in the sixties where some former players from the forties could critique their play on the field on a weekly basis.
The current Score staff will always insist this guy was a hell of a guy as they knew him mostly as an old man and didn't see the likely mean streak he had when he was in his youth making a meager living from breaking limbs and spitting on opponents. To me Doug Buffone was just some nasty old man on the radio that was rude to callers like me who disagreed with his stupidity as he really knew little on the sport especially on the offensive side and who had such a big mouth about other players from the safety of the far away studios and his age. Doug Buffone dead at the age of 77.
