Andy Cruz and Ramon Ramos got together recently for a blogosphere discussion of the increasingly deadly and morbid bull celebrations in Spanish villages. This past summer saw an incredible ten tourists succumb to injuries and died in battles in fiestas involving harassing full grown thousand pound beasts and we though of no better than two sons of Spain writers themselves to try to explain why Spanish society continues to be mute on ending these celebrations. They also discuss what lead rise to these festivals and why the media and government has been slow to criticize these cash cow summer events for local municipalities in Spain.
Andy Cruz: Well lets be honest in a poor Spanish republic wrecked by years of austerity this barbaric and I say culturally embarrassing practice of Bull runs is gaining steam so to say in this culture despite the more potent dangers.
Ramon Ramos: Yes nine people were gored to death but lets remember they were not all Spaniards. Foreigners come and flock here by the thousands to partake in..
Andy Cruz: Yes they do with the governments encouragement for these tourist dollars. They are not going to Finland for these events. it is Spain alone in Europe that has these ridiculous events. I imagine much of this complicity of government is similar to what the Roman Emprie did with their games.
RR: Granted. Spain is a country in flux where celebrations of bull harassment is still glorified despite international reassure and sophisticated Spaniards trying to end these summer parties. The increase poverty of this land gives more excuses to get drunk, dumb, and stupid. I see these events similar to meth heads in rural America with little else going into their lives than to stage these animal harassing parties. More and more small rural districts are trying to cash in on this cow or bull so to say and stage these events all over the country leading to increase in death and injuries.
AC Blasting this silly ancient tradition of Bull runs in Spain has been an agenda of this blog and we are somewhat curious of the sudden increase of death and mayhem and how calls of ending bull stampedes and public runs have been silenced.
RR Each country is allowed their traditions and customs but there should clearly be boundaries and rules in order to establish to the drunk idiots and min-thought peasants that some traditions need not be run anymore.
RR Spanish rural fucks use these animals as village entertainment and the Spaniards obsession with these massive animals resembles India's at times although for different reasons. For Spaniard men, and it is usually foolish men, the running along side bulls resembles some manhood achievement and is being copied from other Europe and and global travelers seeking a unique experience.
AC Well we always root for the bulls and hopefully next summer they can double their human causality rate and maybe increase awareness of this revolting events and put a end to the increase of village fiestas in the summer having these dangerous runs.
RR Spanish public money through town halls continues to fund bullfighting despite the cutting of bull fights in half since 2007. I the meantime bull breeders have sold bigger dangerous bulls to these village events and runs to make up the slack of lack of sales to the bullfight rings which according to the economist magazine is the reason for the number of increase injuries and death.
AC The number of bull runs have quadrupled as these towns try to make some jingle for their village and at last count there are 16,000 of these bulls runs and celebrations in Spain every year. Stop and think about this. I don't know why they don't try something else that doesn't involve these beautiful creatures perhaps running and dodging high-speed trains. Spaniards are fucking idiots as are the Latin Americans that try to have these same traditions of bullfighting and runs.
RR Yes I expect some neo-liberalist towns and villages to try to attempt to emulate Spain. town halls though are to blame for the increase of these mini-Pamplona events averaging about two thousand new ones every year. hey are much cheaper to organize and in it they hope to draw these runs into all summer events getting more amateur bull-running tourists who want a cheaper fare or who can't make it to the more famous Spanish celebration.
AC I may be more willing to say these Spanish bull runs are becoming more or less a more global or Euro celebration then of amateurs than actual Spanish celebrations. I can't see how else more of these celebrations could of been organized without an influx or international fools coming into the only country insane enough to have so many big bulls running in these deregulated charges and mixtures of human and male Bos Taurus flesh meeting and ramming into each other for the glory of old Spain.
RR I wasn't that long ago that deaths in bull runs would not occur in many years but now they are exploding. We can only hope the costs of these events soon overcome the revenue generated because until this happens these events will increase and depressingly may even increase in South America. many regions in Spain have outlawed bullfighting but amend these festivals to occur and allow the bulls be stomping for the entertainment of the masses. The Roman gladiator days were tradition but should we allow this to occur again. I wouldn't be surprised to see some Italians try to bring back gladiator and animal battles in the coliseums again to get political distraction of the masses. Eurotrash are just plain stupid and could get back to that stage if these festival bull runs in Spain are any indication.
AC We thank you for this important discussion and we will continue to follow leads and see where this Spanish tradition takes the country in the following months leading up to more summer celebrations surely to be as maddening and crazy as last summer. These events are goijg to have to be attacked witb the same zealousness that Spaniards and others fought to limit actual bullring fights and were successful. Spanish tradition and culture doesn't have to involve harassing thousand and bulls running aside it and whacking it in the testicles. What the fuck is the matter with these tourists and Spanish assholes. I wonder why they don't substitute cow dung with tomatoes in that other part of their Pamplona rituals.
RR Thank you for he discussion and lets hope out there the bulls continue to smack and stomp these suckers to their graves and the ER with their goring and brute strength.
