Recep Tayipp Erdogan has threatened to leave Europe and the alliance of the North Atlantic Alliance and questions whether this nation will move closer to the Russians was brought up following the failed coup a month ago. The perception in Ankara is that NATO didn't support Erdogan in a pivotal dangerous couple of days in Turkey and without a doubt if this was Denmark that was witnessing a coup more would of been said and done on this attempted coup. Turkey and Erdogan's dictatorship may say kaput with this European alliance given these events and especially the trouble Turkey has had trying to establish a EU membership and easier travel within Europe.
I say good riddance as Turkey was about as much European as Vietnam and this country is always a natural enemy of Russia and can take care of itself. If Recep Erdogan wants to move closer to the Islamic World or fellow autocratic Russian state under Vladamir Putin then let it be. Turkey has its own problems and will be severally dismantled some day soon as the Kurds gain ore economic and military power. If Turkey does move closer and ends centuries of mistrust and hatred then it is good for the region as well. in a secular world states need to dispel the notion that religion still matters and eventually recep Erdogan will realize he can retain power without the symbolism and importance of a mid-century religion where womans head exposure is a major concern. turkey also doesn't lie EU and NATO influence and telling them how to crack down on their internal dissidents who tried to overthrow the government and this alone is warrant for Turkey to quit the alliance. Turkey is a traditional enemy of Europe and why they even tried to emulate and join with Europe was primarily out of fear of the long-gone Soviet State. one would say NATO is another empire alliance that needs to go as well.
