Joey Meyer is dead.. the rise and fall of DePaul University and his major role

      Payton Jenkins

Make no mistake that in the '70's you can still be a nerd and an athlete. This clearly was a case with failed former DePaul head coach Joey Meyer who basically got the head coaching job because he was a son of legendary culture Ray Meyer at the same university. Joey Meyer actually was a pretty decent player for a late sixties basketball being drafted in the 15th round of the NBA Draft when they had that many rounds. Joey Meyer would play 3 years with DePaul and basically be assistant coach for a decade before taking over his father for a university that was constantly

ranked in the top five of basketball in the '70s. What happened though was when Joey Meyer as a nerd who took over for DePaul University the program virtually collapsed and he was not able to do the same coaching success and long-term rain as his father Joey Meyer must have been a horrible coach as he never basically was a head coach again and toiled in Developmental League

coaching for a decade before his death this past weekend. Joey Meyer it can be argued pretty much sunk De Paul basketball as it was once one of the top programs in the country consistently ranked in the top three and always a number one seed for half a decade in the late '70s and early '80s. However Ray Meyer would die and the recruiting classes Joey Meyer failed as Joe was a nerd that a few stellar ball players wanted to play for Joey. Joey Meyer could not recruit the star players and basically

DePaul University collapse where it went from being an independent to joining the Big East basketball league where De Paul sits to this day always in the second tier of the huge Collegiate League with tough college teams that always kick the ass of DePaul.  And what is totally reprehensible is mainstream media Outlets such as the New York Post and The Daily Beast are calling former failed head coach Joey Meyer a legendary coach. Perhaps they mean he is legendary in the fact that he took over a Powerhouse program from his father and totally driven it to the ground where it is not recovered ever since . Paul De University should go division 3 or any NAIA if they can no longer compete in division one they are consistently losers and embarrassment to the city of Chicago. The land of Lincoln just

cannot compete in college sports whether be football or basketball and the rise and fall De Paul University has been a utter shocking development in collegiate Sports in the region that really doesn't get it's due notice. Joey Meyer I would say in my opinion is 100% responsible for it and he utterly alone destroyed this basketball one time powerhouse program. Joey Meyer is dead at the age of 74
