Harry Carry was his forever sports broadcaster as the profession of baseball announcer, one is able to stay in 40 to 50 years as this is an easy gig and all Harry Carey did was watch ball games and call them. For a privileged few such as he and Vin Scully keeping this gig for four or five decades was a incredible occupation and privilege. Harry would often get drunk while he was calling the games and on this day 8/8/88 Harry Carey called the first night game at Chicago's Wrigley Field. the game was packed to the Rafters and the arrogant and pompous came out including Chicago pencil-dick actor Bill Murray made his usual appearance at a Chicago Cubs game. Carey started his slow and mental decline on this day is he made numerous mistakes in this short four inning game and the cognitive decline of Harry Carey was a 90's phenomenon in Chicago and was talk of the sports town. Harry Carey is not that uncommon from these geriatric old dinosaur Democrats and Mitch McConnell who stayed in politics well past their prime and should not have been allowed to stay as long as they have. Harry Carey just had too much difficulty remembering names and recalling the balls and strikes and by 1988 ....this summer 1988 he was in full mental and brutal decline.
The Chicago Cubs though knew Harry was a cash holy cow and were not about to let him go and wanted to ride his full popularity and the marketing gimmicks that his brand could extract from the exhilarated harry fan base. The first night game was a hot humid boring night when Harry Carey's dribbling mouth was utterly like a Doberman Pinscher who hadn't been fed for a couple days. Harry Carey just could not stop looking at the scantly clad women in the late 80s attending Wrigley Field and his mouth was constantly drooling and licking. In addition...in addition this disgusting and perverted old man would often promote and drink Budweiser while calling games and clearly on this night he must have dropped eight to nine by the third inning and this could have contributed it to his cognitive and mental decline being such a heavy
alcohol drinker. Somehow Harry Carey would carry on until 1997 and he would still work a decade after this atrocious 8//8/88 game that thankfully was called short before Harry carries drunk like a skunk state became more apparent. Harry Carey would die during the winter of 97 and 98 is he got drunk around Valentine's Day and fell off his chair eating one of his many usual free dinners of steak and lobster that is expected for a privilege sports entertainer gets to enjoy. Harry was a disgrace and still is beloved in the Chicago land area with numerous restaurants being named after the silly old bastard who absolutely just did nothing but watching baseball game and called it as it went
