In this wonderful book on Leopards It came across that this beautiful cat has trouble with all sorts of predators but a common theme was the harassment from Hyenas and baboons towards the Leopard. I have found little research of Baboon-Hyena interaction in he plains of Africa
CF: Obviously the beauty of this ct draws animosity and jealousy.
JG : Not just that but these two animals are opportunist bullies that rely on other animals for their food source. Hyenas can hunt but often are lazy and seem to relish the idea of stealing a meal from an avid hunter like a Leopard or lion.
CF: Hyenas have the smelling ability of an eyesight of an eagle. They are more likely to attack a Leopard when it smells one of its hard earned fresh kills. The muscles and muzzle of the hyena make it a total bad ass creature.
JG The baboon is a monkey albeight a very large and powerful one. They have been known to chase down Leopards and avenge a death from its troop at the hands of a Leopard. A healthy adult male baboon can rip the arm off a Leopard and heir canines and larger than many big cats. Troops of baboons also relish is throwing rocks and stones at Lions and Leopards just for the fuck off it.
CF. yes this funky monkey deserves rightfully respect from the spirit masters and without a doubt the bravery of the baboon is greater than the top Gorillas of central Africa. You would never see an adult male Gorilla charge a Leopard.
JG: Well that might be only because they reside in tropical jungle regions away from the large cats.
Hyenas though scrap it out and will fight a pride of lions for some bushmeat taken for granted by the natives in Africa. Hyenas will tug a war with a Impala carcass with a Leopard until the big cats strength brings it up the fucking tree. Let me see a baboon do this.
CF: No but a baboon will chase and force a Leopard to take refuge in a dark cave not in dire need for some measly bush meat but just to show the spotted cat its ability to scare them off and demand respect on the savannah
JG So who wins in a fight and how come in a nature TV show I never see these two animals going at it??
CF: Tough question. I would say it depends on whether it is a one on one fight or a group fight. Hyena females are bigger than the males and in baboon society females are alot smaller and less aggressive. hands down the hyena is a more bad ass mammal.
JG: Got to disagree wit this. Hyenas are scavengers and he baboon is evolutionary progressing to be one adaptable mean creature and worthy of its own category away from monkeys. Baboons can fuck the shit out of both Hyena genders as all hyenas have vaginas or something., I say baboons are the worse and scariest fuckers out there.
