Dave Barry's excellent book talking about Florida make mention of Illinois often and the corruption of the state and how every governor always winds up in jail. I am sure Barry was referring to the idea that all states have their problems but people like picking on Florida jealous of the weather and easy living in the sunshine state. Barry is poignant on the fact that many of the news articles people read concerning Floridians are actually people who recently migrated to the state and Florida's main problem is attracting the lower-income riff raff from other states displaced by their native cities and states in this massive new era of inequality and take over colonolinization of parts of America by the Indian and Chinese.
Barry should make mention of Chicago's Steve dahl and his radio partner Garry Meier for their endlessly display of vocal mockery and hatred for this state. Dahl could find stories of his beloved Hawaii of its native sons acting neurotic and eccentric but somehow hatred of Florida is a major goal of Steve Dahl. Likewise for Garry Meier anyone not in a imported 3 piece 5 grand Italian suit is somehow less than human and likely in Meier's mind is a skunk ape. Garry Meier and the elite attitude of so many urban hucksters of the economy drawing unnesesst large chunk of the nations income are the real skunk apes of society.
Speaking of Skunk Ape, Barry spends a chapter of this mythical creature of Florida and other unique oddities of his native state that he is proud of and defending of much in this book. The Skunk Ape is a man-beast that is all over Florida , is known for eating alligators and for leaving aton of dung on peoples porches in many a mobile park home and community through the years. Barry's impressive and humorous book spends a chapter on this and Barry could write a whole book of this topic. Dave Barry though shouldn't feel the need and just pretty much write a book of modern day inequality for the large increase in Floridians most of which were not native to the state. This is an overall funny book of a great writers intake of criticism from all corners of America into one particular corner and to see Barry blast Illinois in the beginning of the book likely is proof that he drove through Chicago listening to dahl and Meier's ridiculous segment of their show about Florida when in fact elite and hick Illinois has even more jackasses and skunk Ape Gorillas in their own midst and not all of them are named Steve Dahl and Garry Meier of WLS radio fame.
