Scott MArtelle's book gives a quick history and storyline of America's worse city and how it became that way. Detroit was once an upper echolon urban area that offered all of its citizens an outstanding way of life but it slowly changed. Scott goes through the early history from the French and British days and explains the massive impact of the automobile on the layout and look of the city. The city became a one industry town . The other decline is the tremendous growth of population due to migration for this growing fossil fuel polluting industry of Detroit and mr martelle goes through the riots of 1943 and 1968 as competition for jobs and housing lead to multi-racial diversity conflict. In a way the Souths inability to provide jobs to all of its citizens was the eventual downfall of Detroit as it fell to a slum as quickly as it grew to a large metroplitan area. What this auther refuses to acknoledge is that for the people of Detroit the entitlement attitude sunk in fast and those that stayed in the city didn't do anything to improve conditions and in fact made it worse for sport. It was boredom and youth unemployment that lead to so many burnings of homes on halloween and what outside investor would be willing to invest in a city with people who look forward to fires on devils night. Detroit has some of the biggest urban scum in America with the proud thuggish attitudes and util they are extuinguished this is a city that will remain worse off than what you wold find in Uganda or Somalia. Detroit will never be a great city unless it is eventually civilized and made safe for humanity.
