It is November 24 1978 and a little know,ugly, unfunny comedian is about to make his appearance of the classic tonight Show with Johnny Carson. David Letterman's stand up performance was completely miserable this night and luckily for the Central Indiana hick much of the audience this night was mad eup of friends who helped him rise up to the ranks of television and onto the tonight show platform. As I re-watch David's first appearance on the tonight show, I am still astonished this jerk actually became a star of late night TV. My parents often watched the tonight show at this time and I would often crawl on their bed as an excuse to watch TV and likely I had seen this stand up act as it occurred. few realized this awful comedian, who bombed tremendously this night, would withen a year be guest filing for the king of Late night. Johnny Carson had humor and talent but as far as this clown, he was an unfunny beatnick with bad dry humor that the big wigs and honchos determined was a new generational shift for comedy.
Dave tanked but was still invited for a seat next to Dave as executives already made the decision this clown would be heavily involved with future television projects of some type for NBC. David Letterman came to johnny's desk,sat like a queer, and then proceeded to make fun of south bend,Indiana and the rest of the state and Midwest because ahhh they are not cool enough to attract investment media big production industries like California and New York City. Davis Letterman in most universes would of rightfully be stuck pumping gas a generation or two ago but somehow through the massive media spending and corporate downgrading of uplifting their workers incomes clowns of the seventies and eighties found opportunity to hoard money away from productive workers and into mainstream media monopolists and their ideas of what should be quality and respectable programming for the public.
