The Last King of Scotland is a movie I decided to check out recently mainly because it has an African theme and I love anything historical. I also have an interest in dictators and knowing all of the mass tyrants through history and perhaps no one was bigger than the late great Idi Amin from Uganda. Forrest Whitaker plays him brilliantly as the fat mad man whose paranoia and lust for power enabled him to kill over 200,000 of his fellow Ugandans in the seventies. I really was looking forward to the movie and it did not disappoint me in being another African thriller showing how these people are totally unable to run their own lands in a civilized manner. Unfortunately only later did I learn when I did a Wikipedia search on this story did I find out that the whole story of the movie was bullshit and Amin never had a dam Scottish doctor. This was all fudge that Hollywood put in this movie to have many sex scenes with a young blue-eyed hunk who supposedly spelt with one of Amin's many wives. I hate when Hollywood puts in this inaccuracies in movies just to have a white star and numerous sex scenes in what should of been a movie about an infamous historical figure in the post-colonial world. This movie I don't think drew a large audience despite these attempts to draw in more of a movie audience but the acting and plot make this entertaining enough if totally inaccurate on a historical record. If they wanted a fictional character for the young doctor to be in this movie then they should of made the seventies era insane dictator of a Central African country to be fictional as well. Perhaps no other actor can look and play the part of Idi Amin better than Forrest Whitaker and his role is the only reasonI would recommend this movie.
