The main differences between American and British approach is the British usually sent people with wide knowledge of the culture of these people while American arrogance to this region has been embarrassing. Rashid makes the case that no amounts of evil committed by the Taliban and Ba'ath party officials can display the notion that these people of the oak do not want to be ruled by outsiders with complete arrogance to their religion and region. They are well aware that the American idea of democracy is actually a government that does what Washington and the oil companies want them to do. The author goes through the Palestine issue and Bill Clinton's attempts to fix this unfix able problem that will always exist as long as there is a Jewish alien presence on the map. Te geo-strategy of the Middle East made this a region where European powers vied for influence before oil became an important issue. The false promises of Arab independence following World War I lead to the built up anger that was seen in is region and India from a people tired of being ruled from Europeans.
Iran was the first country to become a petrol state but took it several decades to get more of a better deal for the nation from the oil companies and basically Iran took a long time to wrestle any Western influence. The amount of Russian,British, and American involvement to destabilize and basically use Iran as an economic colony was so numerous and Rashid goes through the long history of Iran's struggle with the West and its oil companies. The importance of the formation of OPEC in 1960 can never be underestimated for helping the governments in this region to get some sort of independence and control in improving the revenue of their countries income. Unfortunately many self centered and selfish elites soon got control and replaced the colonials and oil executives in their hoarding of the wealth from the rise of oil revenue. This is a very interesting book on the Middle East and Mr Khalidi is a great historian and writer of this topic and an be seen around the web and YouTube channels taking the West on and putting responsibility for their misrule and mistakes controlling this region for their ill fated long gone empires.
