One news story that I gleefully waited for years finally appeared as Walgreens announced it will close two hundred stores in communities it no longer sees as economically viable. Walgreens was typical of the arrogant growth of retail drug stores as they required an new building to be built from ground up in some partnership with greedy developers who wanted key corners of major intersections mostly in suburban and rural areas. many urban areas provided tough regulations on size and land value made it hard for Walgreens to penetrate urban yuppies stores with their over-priced junk from China. now Walgreens announced that an even two hundred stores will shut down as they didn't announce which stores across the country would see their Walgreens eliminated.
I just want to know what these suburban village leaders who lose their Walgreens will see what becomes of these overpriced empty buildings after they lured these companies with tax breaks to buy out the corner bar or restaurant owner. The Deerfield based company did a good job over the years restructuring the suburbs from looking like a quant small town country area into a ridiculous suburban sprawl and into the image that Deerfield,Illinois looks as a corporate strip mall and gas station plaza that has about as much vibe and excitement as a tire shop. This cost saving decision is not because Walgreens is seeing revenue done it is because they no longer need the advantage of constructing so many stores and the income and profit that came from this growth. The fact that Walgreens made a strong requisite on the size and type of building only to abandon them a few years later pretty much sums up corporate decisions and destruction of small towns, suburbs, and village landscapes thanks to behomeths like this company that at a will can get local corrupt village leaders to alter a community and bulldoze a Walgreens on every corner. I hope this company sinks with their over-priced items and no service available to ask questions. The capricious actions of this rotten company from expansion to contraction shows the depths of the power of these globalized communities into destroying local communities to make a few bucks for a few years.
