Pilsen is a neighborhood they are trying sp hard to gentrify buy stubborn Puerto Ricans continue to stand in the way. A bar that often got praise from the Chicago business and bar press was Simone's on 18th street and some time ago I was at this sleazy version of a Puerto Rican hipster bar thing. The bar was filled with weird regulars and I remember seeing the victim of this past weekend as a clearly visible strange character that looked at gringos as he either wanted to kill them or bed them.
This guy was a regular with his hat and so forth and I vividly remember him just sitting in the bar. A bar could be a dangerous place and this guy apparently decided that any female that walked into the bar was fair game regardless if she was with a male or not. That type of cocky Don Juan attitude can get you killed in a neighborhood like Pilsen and for Rudy Avina it was last call at Simones. Rudy had been chatting up all night with this girl who was escorted into the bar by a guy named Ulises Almaraz who took exception to Rudy's constant interruption with his gal and decided to bring a knife and cut up Rudy's pipe and lifeline. despite the flow of business, bars, and money into Pilsen this area remains one tough shithole nothing like the area surrounding the Itasca Inn where I happen to bartend and work about. I would never take a girl to a bar in Pilsen yet alone chat up and go on the take with some PR's claimed woman and Rudy should of known better.
A terrible tragedy as two lives are ruined and from all accounts this Ulises was not a ex-con or anything like this just a regular guy with a mental disease and who had trouble with women. I am just glad rudy didn't bring this shit into the Itasca Inn. stay tuned for more bar and crime news stories here.
