There are many writers of cities that basically think cities are more important than the rest of the nation. Benjamin Barber wrote some nonsense called "if mayors ruled the world" and he writes the usual garbage how cities are more important because rich foreign investors don't want to travel and do business in the heartland. This is the same crap that Richard Florida writes about
interconnectedness and creativity all flowing to the cities around the world. what it is basically that most of the wealth is going to one segment of the international community who only decide cities are conveniently and easier to control. These international elites basically want to form their own city-states around the world where their laws and customs trump the host countries and basically this is the same way colonialism was used by the European powers. Barber foolish talks about cities and democracy and what he means is democracy for those with money and ability to mayors more than they can influence the leader of a nation. Jerks like Mr Florida and Barber hail the new feudal era where cities and their impressive skyscrapers are the new castles. This view of the country side has also been played out through history and one can only look at the Byzantine Empire and when they lost their countryside they had no one able to fill their ranks and military. While these creative folks are busy being creative and developing networks and jumping mobile applications it is the people in the country that fill the ranks of the military fighting for overseas cheap energy.
Benjamin Barber has written a few boring books over the years but this city supremacy book really blows. after each chapter he profiles and writes a small bio of an international big city mayor from around the world most whose wonderful mayoral run was riddled with corruption. This guy looks like a weasel. Guys like Benjamin Barber and the other urban fuck Richard Florida overlook the mayoral corruption as being of little importance has long as creativity, networking, innovation, and cooperation is not trampled with and the upper classes ability to create more enormous wealth for their monopolies and power structure. These guys live in a fantasyland and trying to transform nations cities into their fantasy cities where nothing else matters except a continuation of the brutal capitalism that has existed for decades for those without ability to write their own paychecks from accumulation of wealth through control of local governments and laws.
